What is a build-a-box subscription?

A build-a-box subscription is a recurring box whose contents the shopper chooses, within slots the merchant defines — "pick two dark roasts and one decaf, every month". The merchant controls the shape of the box and which products are eligible; the shopper controls what actually goes in it.

#Why merchants use it

A fixed box churns when a subscriber tires of one item in it. A box the subscriber can re-pick each cycle turns that cancellation into an edit, which is also why a swap is such a common save offer — see Pause vs. skip vs. swap.

#How WallaB.AI models a box

A bundle is defined as a set of slots. Each slot carries a label, a minimum and maximum number of items, and a pool of eligible products. A per-bundle switch decides whether shoppers may customize at all: on, they get a "Customize your box" editor in the portal; off, the contents stay merchant-controlled, which is what a mystery box wants.

Slot constraints are checked in the portal as the shopper picks, and checked again on the server before anything is saved — the interface is a convenience, not the enforcement.

#What is not available yet

Today a bundle subscription is created by the merchant or their team and customized by the shopper from then on. Letting shoppers assemble a box at storefront signup arrives with the Shopify checkout integration; it does not ship today.
