Dunning & card-expiry warnings
The failed-payment retry ladder and proactive card-expiry emails.
Dunning is the automated recovery path for failed subscription payments; card-expiry warnings try to prevent the failure from ever happening.
The dunning ladder
When a charge fails, WallaB.AI™ retries it on a schedule you configure in Settings → Dunning ladder:
- The ladder is a list of day offsets from the failed charge — the default is 1, 3, 5, 7 (retry after one day, then on day 3, 5, and 7).
- Up to 12 steps, each 1–180 days, strictly increasing.
- The ladder in force is snapshotted when a failure first happens, so editing your settings never scrambles recoveries already in flight.
Each retry that fails sends the shopper a branded payment notice email (one per rung), pointing them to their portal. On success the subscription recovers automatically. If the whole ladder is exhausted, the subscription is marked failed and the shopper is notified.
Payment notices are transactional email — they are always delivered regardless of marketing preferences, like any account notice.
Missed cycles after an interruption
If billing is ever interrupted — a prolonged outage, or a subscription that sat overdue — WallaB.AI™ does not bill retroactively for the time that passed. When billing resumes, any cycles that fell in the past are skipped, never charged: no order was created for those periods, so the customer is never billed for deliveries that didn't happen. The subscription is charged once and its next billing date jumps forward to the normal schedule, so billing simply continues on its usual cadence. When periods are skipped this way, the subscription's activity timeline records it, so the forward jump is always explained.
Card-expiry warnings
Enabled by default (Settings → Card expiry warnings): a nightly check finds cards expiring within your warning window (7–60 days ahead; default 30) and emails the shopper before a charge ever fails. The email links the shopper to their portal sign-in.
Note
Alongside the warning (and the first dunning notice after a failed charge), Shopify also emails the shopper its own secure "update payment method" link — the card form is hosted by Shopify, so card details never touch WallaB.AI™. Shoppers can request the same link any time from the Update payment method button on their portal subscription page.
